Coaching Hot Seat
I don’t know about you, but I love sports. Let me be more specific: I love Football and the joy of the SEC, and a few handpicked favorite players in the NFL, like DeAngelo Williams and Luke Kuechly. For the next few months I’ll follow the draft, and the rollercoaster of coaching substitutions that will happen before the 2016 football season

The list of coaches rated “0” made me smile. It takes hard work, inspiration and perspiration to be ‘Untouchable’ in position. I saw Dabo Swinney being interviewed prior to the National Championship game and he was pretty frank about being fired in the past: If you’re coaching in college, you had better bring home the W, or you’ll be looking for a new job. Just ask Les Miles; he can tell you all about it.
I have found these things to be true about Coaching:
If you’re not recruiting, you’re going to lose. It’s just a matter of time
You can be a darn good coach and still lose
You have to be willing to bench a player to bring a better one forward
The Head Coach is expected to coach *both* the players and the coaches under him
Effective coaching is the difference between a great team and a mediocre one
In my job, I have been lucky to coach some really interesting practices. I have brought home the W more times than I can count, which for me typically means a collections increase of $100K, $250K, $500K – even a cool million bucks in multi-doctor practices. Money is a perfect yardstick when you aren’t working with touchdowns and safeties.
I have also, just so you know, brought home the W and gotten fired anyway, and that was a great lesson for me. I’m pretty sure someone like Mark Richt knows all about that, and that puts me in some pretty heady company.
In the end, coaching is about bringing a bigger return than the investment. When you look at the revenue streams that come to winning universities – the ESPN and major network money, the ticket sales and concessions, the team wear, the economic boom that games bring to an area – the coach’s salary is a drop in the bucket compared to what is garnered. It’s just like that in dentistry, if you’re with the right Coach. Everyone on our staff sleeps well at night, secure in the knowledge that for around $450 a week we both coach and market our client’s offices. Unlike Nick Saban’s contract, ours is open ended.
